The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 (ESPR) entered into force in July 2024. It is the EU framework for ecodesign requirements for most physical products, and the Digital Product Passport (DPP) is one of its tools.

The Digital Battery Passport (DBP) is one category of DPP. According to the European Commission, certain types of batteries are the first product group for which a DPP becomes mandatory in the EU; the Digital Battery Passport is introduced under the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and relies on the common DPP technical system established under ESPR.
How requirements reach specific products
ESPR itself does not say that a given product needs a passport by a given date. Requirements for a product category, including whether a Digital Product Passport is needed and what it contains, are set in delegated acts the Commission adopts for that category, with transition periods.
Working plan and priority categories
In April 2025 the Commission adopted the ESPR and Energy Labelling working plan 2025–2030. The first priorities are textiles, furniture, tyres, mattresses, iron and steel, and aluminium, plus horizontal measures on repairability and recycled content for electrical and electronic equipment.
Passport registry
Article 13 of ESPR required the Commission to set up a Digital Product Passport registry by 19 July 2026, storing at least the unique identifiers, including those of Digital Battery Passports. Check the Commission’s own publications for the registry’s current status.
